Collins calls for NStar Plan

July 12, 2010 | Nick Collins for State Representative

In light of the recent power outages and manhole fires that occurred across the district during the past week, Nick Collins, candidate for State Representative, is asking for NStar Electric to describe their plan to meet the demand of the public for larger amounts of power during heat waves.

According to fire officials, a manhole exploded in South Boston last week as a result of power overload and subsequently spread fire to a second manhole. Residents also experienced power outages on Saturday night as well.

Collins believes that NStar must be candid with the community in regards to a number of issues, including whether older transformers and power lines need to be replaced, how they plan on upgrading the power source to handle the needs of the public, and if they will use generators to get the power back on while repairs are being made.

“Residents have repeatedly expressed concern as to whether or not NStar is taking all of the necessary steps to prepare to deliver power to their customers,” said Collins.” How will they be compensated if lengthy power outages occur consistently during the summer months? Will they reimburse businesses that are unable to operate as a result of these extended power outages? Are South Boston and Dorchester being provided with the same service that more affluent neighborhoods receive every summer? These are questions that need to be answered.”

If residents experience service interruptions they are encouraged to contact NStar’s customer service line at 1-800-592-2000.
